India today officially became host to the tallest statue in the world. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the world’s tallest statue, the “Statue of Unity”, at Kevadiya in Narmada district of Gujarat. The statue of Iron Man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, built on an islet ‘Sadhu Bet’ near the Sardar Sarovar Dam, stands tall at 182 metres. The statue is being unveiled on his birth anniversary. Near the statue, the Prime Minister also unveiled the ‘Wall of Unity’ which has been created with the earth samples collected from various states across the country.
The Statue of Unity stands 177 feet higher than the current world's tallest, China's Spring Temple Buddha in the central Henan province. This statue is twice the height of America’s world-renowned Statue of Liberty.
The statue has been built at a cost of about 2,400 crore rupees. It has been built using over 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement steel, 6,000 tonnes of structural steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze, which was used for the outer cladding of the structure.
The statue has been designed by Padma Bhushan-winning sculptor Ram V Sutar and has been built by Larsen and Toubro and the state-run Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. It took about 250 engineers and 3,400 labourers to construct the statue in 33 months.
Mr Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project on 31st October 2013 when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. With the unveiling, the statue will become a representative and inspiration of Unity, Integrity and Peace across the globe.
