Example: A democracy is likely to degenerate into a tyranny if it does not allow opposition groups to criticise fairly, freely and frankly the policies of the government.

1. Tyranny [tir-uh-nee]

Noun: arbitrary or unrestrained exercise of power; despotic abuse of authority; the government or rule of a tyrant or absolute ruler; a state ruled by a tyrant or absolute ruler; oppressive or unjustly severe government on the part of any ruler; undue severity or harshness.

Synonyms: authoritarianism, autocracy, coercion, cruelty, despotism, domination, oligarchy, oppression, terrorism, totalitarianism, absolutism.

Antonym: democracy.

Example: In step towards merger, faction nullifies Dhinakaran’s appointment as party deputy general secretary.

2. Faction [fak-shuh n]

Noun: a group or clique within a larger group, party, government, organization, or the like; party strife and intrigue; dissension.

Synonyms: bloc, clan, gang, junta, minority, party, sect, side, wing, band, bunch, cabal, camp, caucus, cell, circle, clique, club, coalition, combination.

Antonyms: individual, whole, agreement, conformity.

Example: Women police personnel have as much of a demanding job as their male counterparts, but they have a peculiar ergonomics problem: the official shoes that they are given are designed for men and, therefore, ill-suited to their feet.

3. Peculiar [pi-kyool-yer]

Adjective: strange; queer; odd; uncommon; unusual.

Noun: a property or privilege belonging exclusively or characteristically to a person.

SynonymsS: distinct, distinctive, idiosyncratic, particular, personal, special, specific, unique, appropriate, diacritic, diagnostic, endemic, exclusive.

Antonyms: common, commonplace, general, indefinite.

4. Ergonomics [ur-guh-nom-iks]

Noun: human engineering.

Synonyms: comfort design, functional design, human factors, user-friendly systems.

Example: 12 years on, court acquits all accused in Hyderabad blast case.

5. Acquit [uh-kwit]

Verb: to relieve from a charge of fault or crime; declare not guilty; to release or discharge (a person) from an obligation.

Synonyms: absolve, clear, discharge, exonerate, free, let go, vindicate, deliver, exculpate, excuse, liberate, release.

Antonyms: accuse, blame, charge, condemn.

Example: But an exhibition showcasing the 75-year old history of party organ Murasoli, which he founded as a teenager, not only bears testimony to his envious career as a politician, writer, journalist, cartoonist, orator and five-time Chief Minister, but also to the period when political narrative was dominated by ideas and debate.

6. Testimony [tes-tuh-moh-nee, or, esp. British, -muh-nee]

Noun: Law. the statement or declaration of a witness under oath or affirmation, usually in court; evidence in support of a fact or statement; proof; open declaration or profession, as of faith.

Synonyms: affidavit, data, demonstration, deposition, documentation, evidence, information, statement, testament.
Antonyms: denial, opposition, veto.

7. Envious [en-vee-uh s]

Adjective: full of, feeling, or expressing envy.

Synonyms: distrustful, greedy, suspicious, watchful, appetent, aspiring, begrudging, coveting, covetous, craving, desiring, desirous, fain, grasping, green with envy, green-eyed.

Antonyms: comfortable, confident, content, kind.

Example: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and his deputy Sushil Kumar Modi may have declared their intention to launch a crackdown on illegal sand mining in the State, but a report submitted in the High Court in April highlights that the menace is a “direct result of a collusion between government officials and the mafia”.

8. Crackdown [krak-doun]

Noun: the severe or stern enforcement of regulations, laws, etc., as to root out abuses or correct a problem.

Antonym: beginning.

9. Menace [men-is]

Noun: something that threatens to cause evil, harm, injury, etc.; a threat; a person whose actions, attitudes, or ideas are considered dangerous or harmful; an extremely annoying person.

Verb: to utter or direct a threat against; threaten; to serve as a probable threat to; imperil.

Synonyms: hazard, peril, plague, risk, threat, annoyance, caution, commination, intimidation, jeopardy, nuisance, scare, thunder.

Antonyms: certainty, safety, surety, comfort.

10. Collusion [kuh-loo-zhuh n]

Noun: a secret agreement, especially for fraudulent or treacherous purposes; conspiracy; Law. a secret understanding between two or more persons to gain something illegally, to defraud another of his or her rights, or to appear as adversaries though in agreement.

Synonyms: complicity, conspiracy, deceit, graft, scam, bunco, cahoots, connivance, craft, dodge, flimflam, guilt, guiltiness, gyp, intrigue, plot, racket.

Antonym: honesty.
