World Asthma Day 2017 observed globally
The World Asthma Day 2017 was observed across the world on 2 May 2017 with the theme 'Asthma: Better Air, Better Breathing'.This year theme highlights the resurging environmental pollution and its hazardous impacts on health.World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to improve asthma awareness and care around the world. The Day was established in the year 1998.
Today is World Press Freedom Day; PM reiterates support for free Press
Today is World Press Freedom Day the United Nations General Assembly declared 3rd of May to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has wished on the day and reiterated his unwavering support towards a free and vibrant press, which is vital in a democracy. In a tweet Mr. Modi said, today social media has emerged as an active medium of engagement and has added more vigour to press freedom.
Youth Affairs & Sports Minister Vijay Goel announces revamp of National YouthAwards
Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Vijay Goel announced the revamp of National Youth Awards, which are given for outstanding work done for nation building and community service. Addressing media in New Delhi, Mr Goel said the application for the awards has been made online this year. The Minister said a cash award of 50 thousand rupees each will be given to 25 awardees in individual category. Earlier, this amount was 40 thousand rupees. The Awards are conferred on 12th January. Mr Goel said his Ministry will request the President to honour the winners on 12th of August on the occasion of International Youth Day from this year.

Govt to set up Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra at Rajghat under Swachh BharatMission
The government will set up Rashtriya Swachhata Kendra at Rajghat in New Delhi under Swachh Bharat Mission. Addressing media in New Delhi on the culmination of Swachhata Pakhwada, Rural Development, Water and Sanitation Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said, the work for setting up the Kendra is on. It will be functional next year. The Minister said under the mission, so far, four crore individual toilets have been created. He said, cleanliness is the priority of the government and 14 thousand crore rupees have earmarked for the purpose in this year budget. Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma highlighted the initiatives taken during the Swachhata Pakhwada.
Madhya Pradesh becomes 1st state to shift to January to December financial year
Madhya Pradesh became the first state in India to switch to the January-December financial year from existing April-March cycle. The plan to switch the financial year was endorsed by the state cabinet.A decision to this effect was taken at the state cabinet meeting held in Bhopal.The move and endorsement of the plan will break a 150-year old tradition of adopting the financial year from April to March. The practice of April-March financial year was adopted in 1867 by the British Government.

Indian Army successfully test-fires advanced version of Brahmos missile
The Indian Army has successfully test-fired an advanced version of the Brahmos land-attack cruise missile in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The land-to-land configuration of the missile was launched from a mobile autonomous launcher yesterday. A senior army officer said in New Delhi that the test firing of the missile demonstrated the weapon's unmatched lethality of hitting the centre of a designated target with bull's eye precision. The officer said, the missile met all the flight parameters in a copybook manner.

UN marks 1st World Tuna Day with calls to conserve it to be caught, eaten
The United Nations has marked the first World Tuna Day yesterday with calls to conserve one of the globe's most popular fish to be caught and eaten. General Assembly President Peter Thomson said that tuna plays a critical role in sustainable development, food security, economic opportunity, and livelihoods of people around the world. He said tuna species, which are highly migratory, account for 20 percent of the value of all fish caught and over 8 percent of all internationally traded seafood. The General Assembly established World Tuna Day in December to reinforce its importance to nations around the globe.

RBI and banks spend Rs.21,000 cr a year on currency management
NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant has said that the RBI and other commercial banks spend Rs.21,000 crore every year on currency management operations. On top of this, there are costs associated with fake currency and replacement of soiled and torn notes as well, he added. Kant further stated that cost of cash transactions, though "not apparent to us", is high.

President Mukherjee to give way 64th National Film Awards today
President Pranab Mukherjee will give way the 64th National Film Awards in New Delhi today. Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and MoS Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore will also be present on the occasion. The Awards had been announced Last month. Akshay Kumar has been chosen for the Best Actor Award for Hindi Movie Rustom. Surabhi has been named as the best actress for her role in Malayalam film Minnaminungu-The Firefly.
Shabana Azmi starrer 'The Black Prince' awarded at film fest in Houston
Hollywood film 'The Black Prince', starring Indian actress Shabana Azmi and singer-poet Satinder Sartaaj, was on 3 May 2017 awarded the Special Jury Remi Award at the 50th annual WorldFest - Houston International Film Festival.'The Black Prince' is a historic biopic on the emotional life story of the last king of Punjab -Maharajah Duleep Singh and his fragile relationship with Queen Victoria, who was Godmother to his children. Maharajah Duleep Singh was also named as the Black Prince of Perthshire.
Sunil Chhetri wins Hero of I-League 2016-17 Award
Bengaluru FC striker Sunil Chhetri won the coveted Hero of the League 2016-17 Award. Chhetri won the most number of votes cast by coaches and captains of the 10 teams, which took part in the I-League. The striker had scored seven goals for fourth-place finishers Bengaluru FC.On the other hand,Khalid Jamil, who guided Aizawl FC to a historic title win, was chosen as the Coach of the Year. He was honoured with the Syed Abdul Rahim Best Coach Award.

Naushad Forbes. Famous climber Ueli Steck dies in a tragic accident near Mount Everest
One of the world’s most renowned climbers, Ueli Steck, died in an accident in Nepal near Mount Everest on 30 April 2017. He was 40. Steck died after falling to the foot of Mount Nuptse, a smaller peak in the area. The accident happened when he was doing an acclimatizing climb for an attempt of the never-repeated Hornbein route on the West Ridge of Everest without supplemental oxygen. Steck was planning to climb 8850-metre Mount Everest and nearby Mount Lhotse in May 2017.
