Ganga Cleanliness Pledge Day to be observed on May 2

The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) will observe 'Ganga Cleanliness Pledge Day' on 02nd May 2017 at various places in the river's basin states to spread awareness and ensure public participation in the program. The events will be organized in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Hardoi, Bithoor and Vidhur Kuti; Uttarakhand's Srinagar and Devprayag; Patna and Bhagalpur in Bihar; Sahibganj (Jharkhand) and Kolkata (West Bengal).
India and Turkey agree to strengthen co-operation in Combating terrorism

India and Turkey have strongly condemned the "use of double standards" in combating terrorism and agreed to strengthen cooperation in effectively dealing with the menace both bilaterally and at multilateral fora. In a joint statement, both sides urged all countries and entities to work sincerely to disrupt terrorist networks and their financing and stop cross-border movement of terrorists. The joint statement was issued after extensive talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in New Delhi yesterday.The two leaders also called for early conclusion of negotiations on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT).

India's 2nd tallest national flag hoisted in Kolhapur
Marking the formation day of Maharashtra, CM Devendra Fadnavis on Monday hoisted India's second tallest national flag in Kolhapur at 303 feet. The flag used for the pole was 90 feet long and 60 feet wide, and cost around 1.1 crore for the installation. Notably, India's tallest flag pole, at 360 feet, is installed at the Attari-Wagah border in Punjab.

DoT launches Tarang Sanchar web portal for information on Mobile Tower Radiation
The Department of Telecom (DoT) on 2 May 2017 launched 'Tarang Sanchar’ web portal, a portal that will allow people to track radiation emitted from mobile towers within a locality and check their compliance with the stipulated norms.The portal will help in clearing myths and misconceptions about mobile towers and emissions from them.Through this portal, status of the towers will be available to the users.
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar to launch Vidya-Veerta Abhiyan
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar will launch Students for soldiers- a nationwide Vidya - Veerta Abhiyan today to encourage Universities to display portraits of Param Veer Chakra-decorated soldiers. The aim of this Abhiyan is to instill a sense of patriotism and nationalism among students. AIR correspondent reports that the Minister of State for Defence Subhash Bhamre, two Param Veer Chakra Vijeta Soldiers Rifleman Sanjay Kumar and Grenadier Yogender Singh Yadav will also attend the function.
Tejas Express: New Premier Train between Mumbai and Goa
Indian Railways is expected to launch a new 20 coach premier train called the Tejas Express connecting Mumbai and Goa in June. The Tejas service aims to provide comfort to passengers in the inter-city journeys. Once the Mumbai-Goa run becomes operational, the Railways is likely to extend the Tejas service in Delhi-Chandigarh route. The Tejas service was promised in the Union Railway Budget 2016-17.

Jaitley hands over DRDO developed devices to forces
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley today handed over a number of devices developed by the DRDO to National Security Guard (NSG), Delhi Police and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). The devices handed over in New Delhi today to NDRF included 'E-Nasika', a hand-held equipment which is capable of rapid detection of chemical agents well below their toxic limits. Jaitley also handed over to NSG an equipment called 'OTL-300'. It can instantly detect partially camouflaged optical elements, such as telescopes, binoculars and night vision devices. The 'OTL-300' was given to Delhi Police also. Another portable equipment, capable of remotely identifying explosives, was handed over to P S Purohit, additional director in Intelligence Bureau.

Dubai becomes First City in World to gets its Own Microsoft Font
Dubai has become the first city in the world to have its own Microsoft-designed font. The font will have typeface both in Latin and Arabic script. It will be made available in 23 languages– Afrikaans, Arabic, Basque, Britannic, Catalan, Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, Gaelic, German, Icelandic, Indonesian, Italian, Norwegian, Farsi, Portuguese, Sami, Spanish, Swahili, Swedish and Urdu. The font was launched by the Crown Prince of Dubai Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The font will be used by UAE’s government bodies and also by 100 million Office 365 users around the world.
SpaceX successfully launches secret payload for US military
Elon Musk-led aerospace startup SpaceX on Monday successfully launched a spy satellite into orbit for the US military. The secretive payload was launched on the startup's Falcon 9 rocket. SpaceX then landed the 14-storey-high first stage core of the rocket, which contains the main engines and fuel, back to the ground.
Google introduces 'Solve for India' campaign
Google has announced the new "Solve for India" initiative, especially for tier-2 cities such as Pune, Jaipur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kochi, Indore, Nagpur, Nashik, Madurai, Kanpur, and Chennai. This program will aim to support entrepreneurs and developers of the country. Entrepreneurs will now have the opportunity to learn directly from Google engineers. Some of the areas will include agri-tech, healthcare, transportation, education, sanitation and more.

SBI reduces term deposit rates by up to 50 bps
The State Bank of India has cut its term deposit rates by up to 50 basis points for various maturities. The rates have been revised for medium and long term deposits and for amount below Rs one crore. According to the new structure, for two to less than three years deposits, SBI will offer a rate of 6.25 per cent as compared to 6.75 per cent earlier, the bank said. For the similar maturity, the deposit rates for senior citizen have been cut to 6.75 per cent from 7.25 per cent.

Uber launches its food delivery app UberEATS in India
Uber today started rolling out its on-demand food delivery app UberEATS in India, starting with Mumbai. Uber has partnered with local restaurants to list their menu on the app and the food will be delivered via registered couriers. The standalone app will compete with existing food delivery services like FoodPanda, Swiggy, Zomato, and Google's newly-launched Areo app.

Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu bags USIBC award
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu has been selected for the 'Transformative Chief Minister Award' in recognition for his role in advancing the US-India partnership at the state level. In a statement, the US-India Business Council (USIBC) said in Washington that the award would be presented on 8th of this month at the USIBC West Coast Summit in the Silicon Valley.

INSA Medal for Young Scientist 2017 winners announced
The Indian National Science Academy (INSA) in the last week of April 2017 announced the names of the recipient of the INSA Medal for Young Scientist 2017.A total of 30 scientists have been chosen for the prestigious award. The award, consisting of a bronze medal and cash award of 25000 will be given to the recipients during INSA’s anniversary meeting scheduled in December 2017.The INSA Young Scientists Award is considered to be the highest recognition of promise, creativity and excellence in a young scientist. The award was instituted in 1974 by the Indian National Science Academy.
Padma Venkataraman bestowed with Avvaiyar award
The Tamil Nadu government on 2 May 2017 conferred the 2017 Avvaiyar Award to Padma Venkataraman, a social worker and daughter for former Indian President, the late R Venkataraman.Padma was honoured with the award for her efforts in the field of women’s welfare and the rehabilitation of leprosy-affected people since the past 30 years by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has appointed Syrian refugee and Olympic athlete Yusra Mardini as a Goodwill Ambassador. Ms. Mardini, who has settled in Germany, participated in the first ever Olympic refugee team at the Rio de Janeiro games in 2016.  UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people.

Hockey India recommends Sardar Singh for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna
Hockey India today recommended senior player and former captain Sardar Singh for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India's highest sporting honour. Other players SV Sunil, Dharamvir Singh and Deepika have been recommended for the Arjuna Award while RP Singh and Sumrai Tete have been recommended for the Dhyan Chand Award. Coaches Sandeep Sangwan and Romesh Pathania have been recommended for the Dronacharya Award.
Mark Selby beats John Higgins to retain world title
English professional snooker player Mark Selby won his third World Snooker Championship in four years after registering an 18-15 comeback victory against John Higgins on Monday. The 33-year-old, who has been snooker's world number one for 116 straight weeks now, was 4-10 behind Higgins before registering a comeback to claim the 3.1 crore prize money.
BCCI recommends Pujara, Harmanpreet Kaur for Arjuna Award
BCCI has nominated Cheteshwar Pujara and Indian women's team member Harmanpreet Kaur for the Arjuna award. In the recently concluded Test season, Pujara scored 1,316 runs, the highest ever aggregate of runs by an Indian in a single Test season. Kaur, who represents Sydney Thunder in the Women's Big Bash League, was a significant part of India's Asia Cup victory.
