World Theatre Day - 27th March
World Theatre Day was initiated in 1961 by the International Theatre Institute (ITI). It is celebrated annually on the 27th March by ITI Centres and the international theatre community. Various national and international theatre events are organized to mark this occasion. One of the most important of these is the circulation of the World Theatre Day International Message through which at the invitation of ITI, a figure of world stature shares his or her reflections on the theme of Theatre and a Culture of Peace. The first World Theatre Day International Message was written by Jean Cocteau (France) in 1962.

Surat Airport to upgraded as international airport :
Union Minister Jayant Sinha on Sunday said Surat Airport will soon become an international airport. Sinha said, "We will soon expand runway, improve terminals and add many more flights to Surat airport. Airports Authority of India will begin expansion of runway." He added that Surat would be connected to more cities, including Patna, Ranchi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
Gauri Singhvi from Udaipur 1st to swim from Sea Link to Gateway of India
Udaipur's Gauri Singhvi (14) has become the first girl to swim from Bandra–Worli Sea Link to the Gateway of India, which is a 36 km long route. Gauri started swimming on Sunday at 11:00 am and reached the Gateway of India at 5:30 pm. Since childhood, she wanted to swim in the international channel and therefore eyed the Arabian Sea.
Gangadevipalli a village in Telangana claims 100% literacy, liquor prohibition :
Gangadevipalli, a village in Warangal district of Telangana has claimed 100% literacy and complete prohibition of liquor. A board at the village gram panchayat office further indicates 100% house tax collection, 100% school-going children, 100 % construction of toilets and 100% in small savings. The village also follows family planning norms with each family having a maximum of two children.

Haryana to release vultures with satellite transmitters :
In a first for the country, the Haryana Forest Department is planning to release eight vultures bred in captivity, fitted with satellite transmitters into the wild. The Centre had granted permission for attaching the birds with transmitters to track the endangered vultures after their release. Earlier, only wing-tags could be put on the birds.

Railways to set up Wi-Fi kiosks at 500 railway stations :
Aiming to provide connectivity in remote areas, the Indian Railways will set up Wi-Fi hotspot kiosks at about 500 stations. Named 'Railwire Saathi', the Wi-Fi kiosks will enable people to use services like e-commerce, online banking, e-ticketing for train and bus services among others. RailTel, the telecom arm of Indian Railways, would execute the scheme across the country.
IIIT (Amendment) Bill, 2017 introduced in Lok Sabha :
Human Resources Minister Prakash Javdekar today introduced the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in the Lok Sabha. The amendment bill provides for inclusion of Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM) Kurnool along with the other IITs in the Principal Act.
IITDM Kurnool will be declared as an institute of National Importance with the power to award degrees to students with the passage of the bill. The Indian Institutes of Information Technology Act 2014 confers the status of Institutions of National Importance on the IIITs and also provides for matters connected with administering these IIITs.

Finance Bill to be tabled in Rajya Sabha :
The Finance Bill, 2017, The Appropriation (Railways) Bill, 2017 and The Appropriation (Railways) Number 2 Bill, 2017 will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha today for consideration and return. The Lok Sabha passed the Finance Bill on 22nd of this month, to give effect to the financial proposals of the Central Government for the financial year 2017-18.
In the bill, the Government has capped cash transactions at two lakh rupees instead of three lakh rupees. It is one of the important amendments introduced in the Bill. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had moved 40 amendments to the bill.
India becomes the third largest aviation market in domestic traffic :
India has become the third largest aviation market in terms of domestic passenger traffic, according to an industry report by the Sydney-based aviation think-tank, Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).According to the details in the report, India’s domestic passenger traffic stood at 100 million in 2016, which is only behind the US (719 million) and China (436 million).
ESIC launches Mobile Clinic Services in AP, Telangana :
The Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) on 26 March 2017 launched Mobile Clinic Services for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.With this, workers, who are covered by the ESI facility but unable to access the medical services due to location problems, can now easily avail the services through these Mobile Clinics.
ESI services cover around 48 lakh beneficiaries through 12 lakh insured persons in Telangana. There are a total of six ESI hospitals, 70 dispensaries, 149 panel clinics and two diagnostic centres in the state.

UN conference to negotiate binding treaty to ban nuclear weapons begins
The conference to negotiate a legally binding treaty to ban nuclear weapons begins at the United Nations headquarters in New York today. More than 100 countries are expected to take part in the negotiations. They will likely focus on how to substantiate the illegality of nuclear weapons.
The treaty is to ban nuclear weapons based on the interpretation they are in breach of international laws. About 123 UN members announced in last October that they would launch the UN conference to negotiate a legally binding nuclear ban treaty, even as most of the world's declared and undeclared nuclear powers voted against the talks.

General insurance premium set to go up from April 1 :
Car, motorcycle and health insurance will cost more from April 1 with regulator Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) giving go-ahead to insurers for revision in commission for agents. The change in premium after modification will be limited to +/ 5 per cent of the existing rates. The increase will be in addition to the enhanced third party motor insurance rates, which too will come into effect from April.
The IRDAI (Payment of Commission or Remuneration or Reward to Insurance Agents and Insurance Intermediaries) Regulations, 2016 comes into effect from April 1, 2017. The regulations, the regulator said, bring about certain revisions in commission/ remuneration rates and also introduce the reward system.

GIC may be first PSU general insurer to launch IPO :
General Insurance Corporation (GIC Re) is likely to be the first PSU insurer to tap the capital market as the Finance Ministry has started scouting for merchant bankers to manage its IPO. Two months after the Union Cabinet gave a go ahead to the listing of five general insurance companies, the Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM) has set the ball rolling for listing of GIC Re.
The government holds 100 per cent stake in GIC Re, which provides reinsurance support to 54 general and life insurance companies, both public and private, in the Indian market. The authorised and paid-up share capital of the reinsurance company was Rs. 1,000 crore and Rs. 430 crore, respectively, as on March 31, 2016.

International finance branch to be opened by Axis Bank at GIFT City Gandhinagar :
Axis Bank will open an international finance branch at Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) in Gandhinagar, its CEO and MD Shikha Sharma said today. "Yes we are planning to open an international finance branch at GIFT City," Sharma said when asked about the bank's plan regarding the GIFT City. She was here as the chief guest of the 52th convocation of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A), in which a total 554 students were convocated today.

Freshdesk's Global COO Nishant Rao quits :
Nishant Rao, COO of customer support software startup Freshdesk, has announced his departure from the company. "While I'm sad that this is a big loss for me and Freshdesk, I'm glad he is making the right choice for his future," said Freshdesk CEO Girish Mathrubootham in a blog post. Rao previously served as the Managing Director of LinkedIn India.
Randeep Guleria appointed as Director of AIIMS, New Delhi :
Renowned pulmonologist Randeep Guleria on 24 March 2017 was the Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The appointment was made by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Dr Guleria has been appointed as Director, AIIMS, for five years. Dr Guleria will succeed Dr M C Mishra, who retired in January 2017 after serving for over three years.

India wins archery team gold at Asia Cup :
India's men's archery team won a gold medal in the men's compound event at the 2017 Asia Cup Stage 2 in Bangkok on Saturday. The third-seeded trio of Shivansh Awasthi, Robert Singh Keithellakpam and Aman Saini edged out top-seeded Iran 231-230 in the final to emerge champions. Meanwhile, India's women's recurve team won the silver at the competition.
India wins 73 medals at 2017 Special Olympics :
India won 73 medals, including 37 gold, at the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games, held in Austria from March 14-25. The Indian contingent, known as the Special Olympics Bharat, also won 10 silver and 26 bronze medals in disciplines including alpine skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, among others. The event featured over 2,600 intellectually disabled athletes from 105 countries.
West Bengal win Santosh Trophy for 32nd time :
West Bengal have lifted the Santosh Trophy for the 32nd time by defeating Goa One-Nil in the final of the premier domestic football tournament at Bambolim yesterday. After a goalless 90-minutes' of play, the match-winner came in the dying moments of extra time through Manvir Singh. He found the target with a stunning left-footer, having received a pass from Shaikhom Ronald on the left.

Shuttlers Purva Barve and Varun Kapur handed India double delight by winning their respective age group sections in the Li Ning-Israel Open 2017 badminton tournament held in Israel.
A media release issued in Mumbai on Sunday said 16 year old Purva ranked No. 70 in the world, and fourth-seed in the Under-19 Women's Singles, proved to be a runaway winner against the world No. 61 and third-seeded Lela Minadze of Russia and signed off registering a 21-6, 21-4 scoreline in 18 minutes.

Kashmiris in UAE organise IPL-like Kashmir Super League :
Kashmiris in UAE organised an IPL-like T20 league called the Kashmir Super League, the second edition of which concluded recently. The league started in January with 14 teams consisting of 200 Kashmiri players, and was inaugurated by Indian cricketer Parvez Rasool. The teams were named after different regions in Kashmir and reportedly attracted sponsorship worth 10,000 dirhams (₹1.8 lakh).
