DAYS TO REMEMBER:
International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members - 25 March:

The 2017 International Day of Solidarity with Detained and Missing Staff Members was observed on 25 March 2017. The day is observed each year on the anniversary of the abduction of Alec Collett. The day aims to mobilize action, demand justice and strengthen United Nations’ resolve to protect the UN staff and peacekeepers, as well as their colleagues in the non-governmental community and the press. As of 15 March 2015, 33 UN and associated personnel were detained by State authorities in 15 countries.  One staff member is missing and two contractors remain in the custody of abductors.
International day of Remembrance of the victims of Transatlantic Slave Trade observed globally  - 25th March

Theme : Remember Slavery: Recognising the Legacy and Contributions of People of African Descent
The International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade was observed globally on 25 March 2017 with the theme "Remember Slavery: Recognising the Legacy and Contributions of People of African Descent".
The theme aims to draw attention to the consequences of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, especially the ways in which the enslaved Africans and their descendants influenced and continue to shape societies across the world, including in the areas of technology and culture. The theme also highlights the persistent spirit and innovation of the enslaved people.
Aadhaar card made mandatory for all mobile connections : Govt

The Centre has made it mandatory to link Aadhaar cards with all mobile connections, both new and old, by February 2018. Aadhaar will now be mandatory for getting new SIM cards and service providers have been directed to reverify existing customers using their Aadhaar numbers and biometric details. This comes after a Supreme Court directive to verify all mobile numbers.
Everest to be scaled by Indian Navy as part of 'Seabed to Summit' :

An Indian Navy team is set to scale Mount Everest as a part of its 'Sagar Tal se Sagar Matha (Seabed to Summit)' expedition. The 24-member team, with personnel from INS Chakra and INS Chennai, will plant an ice-axe on the 8,848-metre high peak. Earlier, the team took the ice-axe 40 metres below sea-level off Karwar in the Indian Ocean.

Elephant census starts today in Assam :

In Assam, the five day long elephant census will begin today. Conservator of Forest (Wildlife ) Dibya Dhar Gogoi said that the last census was held in 2011. He said that census will be held in 39 forest divisions. The forest divisions have been divided into 974 compartments to conduct the census. Restrictions will be imposed on tourists movement following the census at national parks and sanctuaries. He said that 29 observers have been deployed to monitor the census. Three methods including spotting of dung will be followed. As per last census, there was 5,620 elephants in Assam.

Re-organisation of field formations of CBEC for GST implementation approved by Finance head Arun Jaitley :
 Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has approved the re-organisation of the field formations of the Central Board of Excise and Customs for the implementation of GST. The CBEC is being renamed as the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, CBIC after getting legislative approval. The proposed CBIC shall supervise the work of all its field formations and Directorates and assist the government in policy making in relation to GST, continuing central excise levy and customs functions. Finance Ministry said in a statement that CBIC will have 21 zones, and 101 GST Tax payer Services Commissionerates. This will ensure rendering of taxpayer services to all the taxpayers through an indirect tax administration structure, having pan-India presence.

100 million USD deal signed by India with World Bank for Uttarakhand Healthcare :
India has signed Financing Agreement with World Bank for 100 million US dollars for Uttarakhand Health Systems Development Project. The agreement was signed in Delhi by Raj Kumar who is Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and Hisham Abdo, Acting Country Director, of World Bank. An official release said the objective of the project is to improve access to quality health services, particularly in the hilly districts of Uttarakhand. It will help expand health financial risk protection and benefit the residents of hilly districts in particular.

Nellore in AP to get Post Office Passport Seva Kendra :
Government has decided to open a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) at Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. It would be the 86th POPSK in the country. External Affairs Ministry and Department of Posts will be working closely for the early operationalisation of this POPSK at Nellore.

Manipur govt decides to set up anti-corruption cell
The BJP-led Manipur government has decided to set up an anti-corruption cell at the Nongthombam Biren Singh's Secretariat in the state for gathering information on corrupt elements in public service. A mobile number has been set up to enable the people to inform the government about malpractices so as to allow the authorities to take appropriate actions.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval's US Visit Reinforces Counter-Terrorism Cooperation :
The Trump Administration is seeking to deepen its counter-terrorism cooperation with India and expand it further, sources in Washington said after National Security Advisor Ajit Doval's meetings with top US officials. Mr. Doval during his US visit this week met Defense Secretary, Gen (Rtd) James Mattis, Secretary of Homeland Security Gen (Rtd) John Kelly, and National Security Advisor Lt Gen H R McMaster.
Expansion and deepening of India-US co-operation in collectively addressing the challenge posed by terrorism in South Asia was the common agenda in all these meetings. Pentagon Spokesperson Capt Jeff Davis said Defense Secretary Mattis specifically applauded India's efforts to promote stability in the South Asia region and both leaders reaffirmed building upon the significant defence cooperation progress made in recent years.
Resolution on protecting heritage Sites approved by UN Security Council :
United Nations Security Council strengthened its protection of global cultural heritage sites threatened by armed conflicts, saying perpetrators of unlawful destruction could be prosecuted for war crimes. From the Bamiyan Buddhas in Afghanistan to the ancient shrines of Timbuktu, deliberate attacks against the world's great heritage sites have multiplied in recent years.
In a unanimously approved resolution, the Security Council called for a systematic protection of cultural heritage sites, following early steps taken in the aftermath of the attacks by Islamic State terror group in Iraq and Syria.

'Earth Hour' being observed by World Wildlife Fund for Nature :
The World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) is observing the 10th anniversary of 'Earth Hour' today. The worldwide event is held annually encouraging individuals to turn off non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 PM local time as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. It was started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia, in 2007
24th March observed globally as The International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims :
In particular, the day recognizes the important work and values of Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero of El Salvador, who was assasinated on 24 March 1980, after denouncing violations of the human rights of the most vulnerable populations and defending the principles of protecting lives.
The Day aims to honour the memory of victims of gross and systematic human rights violations and promotes the importance of the right to truth and justice. The day also pays tribute to those who have devoted their lives to, and lost their lives in, the struggle to promote and protect human rights for all.

RBI directs banks to remain open on all days till April 1 :
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday directed all public sector banks and some private banks to remain open on all days (including Saturday, Sunday and holidays) till April 1 to facilitate government receipt and payment functions. "The concerned departments of the Reserve Bank undertaking government business will also remain open on the above days," the RBI stated.

Disha Microfin bank starts to issue gold, MSME loans to rural borrowers :
Micro-finance platform Disha plans the formal launch of its small finance bank (SFB) in the next quarter, followed by 30-40 branches in the next three months. The SFB, under parent Fincare Business Services, also looks to offer products such as gold loans and micro-enterprise loans to rural customers.
“The branches will have all liabilities products, as well as mobile and internet banking capabilities. On the asset side, we will continue to focus on our existing product lines of micro-finance and micro-enterprise loans, and also launch gold loans.

Kawasaki ends its alliance with Bajaj Auto in India :
Bajaj Auto on Saturday said it has agreed with Japan’s Kawasaki to end their eight-year old alliance for sales and services in India from April 2017. However, Bajaj and Kawasaki will continue to maintain their cooperative relationship across the rest of the world. Bajaj has had an alliance with Kawasaki for the latter's motorcycles through its Probiking network since 2009.
The Competition Commission of India fined Rs591 crore to Coal India for unfair business :  
The Competition Commission of India has slapped a ₹591 crore penalty on Coal India for unfair conditions in fuel supply agreements. Further, the CCI has directed Coal India to ensure uniformity between private and public power producers in fuel supply pacts. Earlier, reports said that Coal India was among the top financial performers in India's central public sector enterprises.
Reliance Industries banned for 1yr over equity derivatives trading  by SEBI :
Securities and Exchange Board of India has banned Reliance Industries and 12 other entities from equity derivatives trading for one year. In an order issued yesterday, SEBI also directed the Mukesh Ambani-led firm to forfeit nearly 1,000 crore rupees for unlawful gains made through alleged fraudulent trading in a nearly 10-year-old case. The case relates to alleged fraudulent trading in the futures and options (F&O) space in the securities of RIL's erstwhile listed subsidiary Reliance Petroleum Ltd. Reliance Industries Ltd said, it will challenge the order before the Securities Appellate Tribunal and termed SEBI's directions as unjustifiable sanctions.

Surface-to-air missile tested successfully by Navy from INS Vikramaditya :
In a boost to India's martime prowess, the Navy has successfully conducted the maiden trial firing of newly installed surface-to-air Barak missile system from its aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. A Navy official said in New Delhi that during the firing carried out in the Arabian Sea, the missile was fired against a live low flying high speed target. He said the target was successfully engaged and destroyed.
The firing was conducted as part of the 'Operational Readiness Inspection' of the Western Fleet by Vice Admiral Girish Luthra, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Naval Command, from 21 to 23 March.

Three naval systems received by Navy from DRDO :
Defence Minister Arun Jaitley handed over three naval systems, developed by premier defence research organisation DRDO to the navy yesterday. The naval systems, given to Indian Navy, are USHUS-II submarine sonar, directing gear for hull-mounted sonar array, and inertial navigation system for ship applications. Sonars detect objects on or under the water and the latest systems are expected to significantly enhance the navy's navigation and communication network.
Speaking on the occasion in New Delhi, Mr Jaitley said there is a need for convergence between India's economic might and evolution of the technology so that the world looks at the country for innovation and new technology.

Four teams sent by ISRO on 36th Expedition to Antarctica :
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in March 2017 announced that it has sent four teams to install stakes on ice for Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) to validate the glacier surface velocity. The teams will mount the stakes around Indian station known as Bharati and Maitri.

ICC Chairman Shashank Manohar has deferred his resignation and will continue to remain in the post, the Board announced on Friday. Manohar delayed his departure after a resolution was passed by the ICC Board requesting him to stay till the ongoing governance and financial restructuring process was complete. He will reportedly remain Chairman till ICC's 2017 Annual Conference in June.

13 medals won by India at 9th Fazza International para Athletics meet in Dubai :
India's para athletes won 13 medals in the season opening 9th Fazza International IPC Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai. Out of the 13 medals, India won five gold, three of which were won by Sundar Singh Gurjar. The 21-year-old Gurjar, who missed Rio Paralympic Games last year, won a gold each in shot put, javelin throw and discus throw competitions.
T20 cricket for physically challenged from March 30
The 7th National Inter Zonal T20 cricket tournament for the differently-abled is to be held in Mumbai from March 30 to April 1. It was announced at a media conference in Mumbai today that five regions of the country - North , East, South, Central and West zone- are the teams set to participate in the three-day event.
It was announced that the tournament would be held under the International Cricket Council's T20 cricket tournament format, with a few relaxations to accommodate cricket for the differently-abled.
