Hindu Editorial Topic 1 : "As bigotry becomes policy"
  • Bigotry - the practice of having very strong and unreasonable opinions, especially about politics, race, or religion, and refusing to consider other people’s opinions
  • Campaign - a planned group of especially political, business, or military activities that are intended to achieve a particular aim
  • Vetting - make a careful and critical examination of (something)
  • Via - going through one place on the way to another place
  • Perhaps - used for saying that you are not certain about something, or that something may or may not be true
  • Owing to - because of
  • Strategic - carefully planned in order to achieve a particular goal, especially in war, business, or politics
  • Indefinitely - for a period of time that has no fixed end
  • Asylum - protection or safety, especially that given by a government to people who have been forced to leave their own countries for their safety or because of war
  • Refugee - a person who has escaped from their own country for political, religious, or economic reasons or because of a war
  • Enthused - to express excitement about something or great interest in it
  • Core constituency - the most important group or groups supporting an ideology, political party, officeholder, or candidate, and whose continuing support is crucial for survival and success
  • Predominantly - mainly, or mostly
  • Blue-collar workers - blue-collar workers do work needing strength or physical skill rather than office work
  • Racial - connected with someone's race (skin colour or other physical features)
  • Shock wave - a very strong reaction that spreads through a group of people when something surprising or bad happens
  • Abroad - in or to a foreign country
  • Sparked - to cause the start of something
  • Bonanza - a situation from which large profits are made
  • Counterattack - an attack intended to stop or oppose an attack by an enemy or competitor
  • Overreach - to fail by trying to achieve, spend, or do more than you can manage
  • Irreparable - impossible to repair or make right again
  • Enjoin - to legally force someone to do something or stop doing something
  • Restrained - controlled
  • Immigration - the act of someone coming to live in a different country
  • Beg the question - if a statement or situation begs the question, it causes you to ask a particular question
  • Constitutional - allowed by the constitution of a country or organization
  • Circumscribed - to limit something such as power, rights, or opportunities
  • Discriminate - to treat a person or particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin colour, sex, sexuality, etc
  • Scrambled - to compete with other people for something there is very little of
  • Concern -  a worried or nervous feeling about something
  • Talent pool - the suitable, skilled people who are available to be chosen to do a particular type of job
  • Reputation - the opinion that people have about how good or how bad someone or something is
  • Beacon - someone or something that encourages people and gives them a good example to follow
  • Humane - showing kindness, care, and sympathy towards others, especially those who are suffering
  • Authoritarian - demanding that people obey completely and refusing to allow them freedom to act as they wish
  • Insistence - a very firm statement that something must happen or that something is true
  • Preferential - giving one person or group an advantage over others
  • Bogeyman - someone or something that people believe is bad and causes problems
  • Retrograde - returning to a condition or situation that is worse than the present one
  • Exacerbate - to make a problem become worse

  • Ideological - based on or relating to a particular set of ideas or beliefs
  • Affinity - a natural understanding and sympathy between people
  • Prospect - the possibility that something good might happen in the future
  • Pelf - money, especially when gained in a dishonest or dishonourable way
  • Alliance - a group of countries, political parties, or people who have agreed to work together because of shared interests or aims
  • A parting of ways - the point at which two people or organizations separate
  • Just around the corner - coming very soon
  • Urban - relating to towns and cities, or happening there
  • Inevitable -  certain to happen and unable to be avoided or prevented
  • Reconcile - to find a way to make ideas, beliefs, needs etc that are opposed to each other capable of existing together
  • Breakdown - a division of something into smaller parts
  • Negotiations - the process of discussing something with someone in order to reach an agreement with them, or the discussions themselves
  • Resent - to feel angry because you have been forced to accept someone or something that you do not like
  • Cede - to allow someone else to have or own something, especially unwillingly or because you are forced to do so
  • Significant - important
  • Probability - the level of possibility of something happening or being true
  • Embarrassingly - making you feel nervous, ashamed, or stupid
  • Indulge - to allow yourself or another person to have something enjoyable, especially more than is good for you
  • Name-calling - the act of insulting someone by calling them rude names
  • Consequence - to accept responsibility for your actions, whatever happens
  • Played down - to try to make a problem or difficult situation seem less important than it is
  • Strident - holding firm opinions or beliefs and tending to express them frequently, in a way that offends some people
  • Chauvinism - the strong and unreasonable belief that your own country or race is the best or most important
  • Vulnerable - able to be easily physically, emotionally, or mentally hurt, influenced, or attacked
  • Poaching - to persuade someone to leave a group or organization and become a member of yours, especially by using secret or dishonest methods
  • Under the threat - likely to be harmed or damaged
  • Conflict - an active disagreement between people with opposing opinions or principles
  • Unsurprisingly - in a way that you expected
  • Flip-flop - an occasion when someone completely changes a plan
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Hostile - not agreeing with something
