ShriThawarchandGehlot Launches ‘Mobile App and Facebook Page’ of ‘National Trust’ on its Foundation Day’

i) ShriThaawarchandGehlot, Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment launched the ‘Mobile App and Facebook Page’ of the National Trust at a function to mark the ‘National Trust Foundation Day’ on the theme “Celebrating Inclusion”.
ii) Addressing on the occasion, ShriThawarchandGehlot said that the National Trust Act for the welfare of persons with Autism, Cerebral Palsy, Mental Retardation and Multiple Disabilities was passed in the Parliament on 30th December 1999 and it is working for the welfare of Divyangjans with commitment.
iii) He said that the National Trust is having 10 schemes for overall development of persons with disabilities which have been revised and launched last year and it has reached more than 74000 PwDs through its schemes. The Government is working on providing “Universal Identity Cards” to all Divyangjans which will be valid in all States for all schemes, he added.
PM launches 'BHIM' app to make digital payments easier

i) Prime Minister NarendraModi today launched a mobile app 'BHIM' (Bharat Interface for Money) which will enable easier digital payments and transactions.
ii) Addressing at DigiDhanMela at talkatora stadium in New Delhi, MrModi said, the the mobile app is a tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar and will immensely benefit the citizens.
iii) The Prime Minister said, the BHIM App is very simple to use. He said, the Lucky GrahakYojana and DigiDhanVyaparYojana are Christmas gifts to the nation.
iv) He said, the mega draw will take place on 14th April, the birth anniversary of Dr. BabasahebAmbedkar. MrModi also called for digital connectivity across the country.
4-Day World Bhojpuri Conference begins in Varanasi

i) The four-day World Bhojpuri Conference began in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh on December 29, 2016 and will continue till January 1, 2017. High Commissioner of Mauritius to India, JagdishwarGoburdhun informed that participants from over 18 countries are participating in the conference.
ii) The Conference has been organised at a private school in Badalalpur where a large number of Bhojpuri speakers residing in different parts of the world will deliberate over culture, religion, language and business among other issues.
Demonetisation: Deadline to deposit old notes in banks ends today

i) The 50-day deadline to deposit the old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes in banks comes to an end today, however, people, will still have time to exchange the currency notes at designated RBI counters till March 31 after giving valid reasons for not depositing defunct notes in their accounts by December 30.
ii) Bankers believe that restrictions on withdrawal of cash from banks and ATMs are likely to continue beyond December 30. After the demonetisation, the government had fixed a limit of 24,000 rupees per week on withdrawal from bank accounts and 2,500 rupees per day from ATMs in view of the currency crunch.
Meghalaya remembers freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah on his martyrdom day
i) In remembrance of well known freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, people are offering respects in Meghalaya on his martyrdom day today.
ii) Way back on 28th of December in the year 1861, an uprising in the Jaintia Hills began under the leadership of U Kiang Nongbah against the British.
iii) The imposition of taxes by the British created uproar amongst the Jaintias and they rose in rebellion in 1862. U Kiang Nongbah, the leader and guiding personality in this rebellion, lead the people in their fight against the British.
iv) In the unequal fight that ensued, many people were martyred. U Kiang Nangbah is still remembered for his courage and patriotism.
BHEL commissions 600 mw unit in Telangana
i) Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd has commissioned the second of the two 600 MW units of Singareni Thermal Power Project in Adilabad district, Telangana.Announcing this on Thursday, the company said in March this year it has commissioned the first unit of the project developed by the country’s second largest coal miner Singareni Collieries Company Ltd.
ii) Over 85 per cent of the coal based power stations, amounting to 5,740 MW, in Telangana have been commissioned by BHEL. Reposing confidence in BHEL’s capability of setting up power plants, the Telangana state utility has placed orders with the central PSU for executing around 6,000 MW of thermal power projects on an EPC basis, the release said.
Railway Minister lays foundation of Nadikudi-Srikalahasti project in Andhra Pradesh
i) Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today laid the foundation via video conference from Delhi, for Nadikudi-Srikalahasti railway project and initiated several other development works in Andhra Pradesh.
ii) Mr. Prabhu flagged off the Double-Decker train between Visakhapatnam-Tirupathi besides launching hi-speed wi-fi facility in Guntur RS and ETTC new hostel building in Vijayawada and route relay interlocking system for Raidurg-Kalyandurg new railway line.
Mori village in Andhra gets Smart Digital village tag
i) Mori, a tiny village under Sakhinetipallimandal in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh has sealed its place on India's digital map by transforming completely into a Smart Digital Village, in every sense of the term.
ii) Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu at a programme accorded the `digital’ status to the village for its rare distinction in undertaking cashless transactions overcoming all the barriers associated with its rural tag.
iii) In fact, Mori is the first village in the State, wired with the fiber network, which goes digital. The fiber grid helped all households of the village access internet, cable service and phone facility with only Rs 149.
iv) All the 1,189 households are having the bank accounts and Rupay cards. Smarts phones have been provided to all the families with the liberal contribution from the public as well as from CSR component funds.

BoB signs MoU with HFL to provide dairy loans to farmers
i) State-run Bank of Baroda and Heritage Foods Ltd (HFL) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to provide dairy loans to farmers through the lender's branches across the country.
ii) Heritage Foods is in the business of procurement, processing and sale of milk and milk products.BoB and HFL will work jointly to provide dairy loans to the farmers which will benefit them in increasing their productivity and earnings under allied activities

Ambuja Cements inks pact with ICICI Bank to drive cashless transactions: Report
i) Ambuja Cement has tied up with ICICI Bank to drive cashless transactions among its business partners — retailers, contractors and masons.
ii) It will help them open current accounts for regular business transactions.Post-demonetisation, construction activity, especially in rural and semi-urban areas, has been facing several challenges as it mostly deals in cash.
FIPB clears 6 FDI proposals worth Rs 1,200 crore
i) The Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) has approved six Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) proposals worth Rs 1,200 crore. Decision in this regard was taken by FIPB meeting headed by Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das.
ii) It has approved the proposals of, Star Den Media Services, SanofiSynthelabo India, Idea Cellular Infrastructure Services, Menarini India, BoehringerIngelheim India and Recipharm Participation.
Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme- 2016 extended up to 31st January, 2017
i) In view of the representations received from various stakeholders and for the convenience of the taxpayers, the last date for availing the Direct Tax Dispute Resolution Scheme, 2016 (the Scheme)  has been extended up to 31st January, 2017. The scheme was to close on 31st December, 2016.
ii) In order to reduce the pending litigation, the Scheme was introduced by the Finance Act, 2016. The Scheme came into force from 1st June, 2016 vide notification S.O. 1902(E) dated 26th May, 2016.

India's first transgender college principal resigns
i) India’s first transgender college principal ManabiBandopadhyay has resigned after about one-and-a-half years in office.
ii) Manabi alleged that she started facing non-cooperation from a section of teachers soon after she took over as the principal of the well-known women’s college
iii) Manabi, whose earlier name was Somnath, underwent a series of operations in 2003-2004 and became a woman.

Playback singer AnuradhaPaudwal to be conferred with honorary D Litt degree
i) Noted playback singer AnuradhaPaudwal will be conferred with honorary D Litt degree by the D Y Patil University on its 5th convocation ceremony, to be held in Kolhapur on Saturday.
ii) The degree is being conferred on Paudwal for her outstanding contribution in popularising Sanskrit shlokas from Durgasaptashati, Shiv MahimaSrot, Bhagwad Gita and other religious texts, vice chancellor of the university, DrPrakash B Behere said a statement issued.
'Dangal' voted 2016's Best Film by Indian film critics' poll
i) Actor Aamir Khan's sports drama 'Dangal' was named the Best Film of 2016 in the year-end 'Film Companion Critics' Poll' in which 23 Indian film critics voted.
ii) While actor ManojBajpayee was named the Best Actor for 'Aligarh', Alia Bhatt was voted the Best Actress.
iii) Meanwhile, Ram Madhvani, who made his directorial debut with 'Neerja' was voted the Best Director.

Nigel Mansell: Briton voted greatest one-time F1 champion by BBC Sport readers
i) Nigel Mansell has been named Formula 1’s greatest one-time world champion by BBC Sport readers. His 32% share was almost double that of fellow Briton James Hunt, the 1976 champion, who got 17%.
ii) He’s seventh on the all-time list of grand prix winners, enjoyed a stellar 15-year career. He was rated by many as the strongest and bravest driver in an era of megastars
British cyclist Bradley Wiggins announces retirement
i) Sir Bradley Wiggins, British former professional road and track racing cyclist, in the last week of December 2016 announced retirement from cycling.
ii) In his 16-year career as a professional, Wiggins won the Tour de France and a record eight Olympic medals.
