  • By-election - an election that happens at a different time from a main election, to choose a Member of Parliament to replace one who has died or left his or her job
  • Pointer - something that shows you an existing situation
  • Inherent - existing as a natural or basic part of something
  • Antagonising - to make someone feel angry with you, so that they start to dislike you or have a negative attitude towards you
  • Prospect - the possibility that something will happen
  • Deviate - to start doing something different from what is expected or agreed
  • Huge - extremely large in size or amount
  • Legislators - a group of people who together have the power to make laws
  • Equipped - having the skills needed to do something
  • Considerably - a lot
  • Reposed - if you repose something such as trust or confidence in someone, you have trust or confidence in them
  • Electoral - relating to an election
  • Outcome - a result or effect of an action, situation, etc
  • Revolt - to say that you will not accept someone’s authority or leadership
  • Demonetisation - to officially stop using particular notes or coins, or a particular currency
  • Overarching - affecting or including everything, and therefore very important
  • Endorsement - an occasion when someone gives official or public support to a particular person or thing
  • Besides - in addition to; also
  • Widespread - happening or existing in many places, or affecting many people
  • Intense - very great and strong
  • Campaign - a series of things that a politician or political party does to try to win an election
  • Acute - very serious
  • Embarrassment - a feeling of being nervous or ashamed because of what people know or think about you
  • Amid - in the middle of or surrounded by
  • Gloom - feelings of great unhappiness and loss of hope
  • Induced - to cause something to happen
  • Solace - something that makes you feel better when you are sad or upset
  • Turn out - to happen in a particular way or to have a particular result, especially an unexpected one

  • Rohingyas -  Muslim Indo-Aryan peoples from the Rakhine State, Myanmar
  • Humanitarian - relating to efforts to help people who are living in very bad conditions and are suffering
  • Crisis - an extremely difficult or dangerous point in a situation:
  • Unfolding -  to happen, or to develop
  • Crackdown - a situation in which someone starts to deal with bad or illegal behaviour in a more severe way
  • Claims - to say that something is true or is a fact, although you cannot prove it and other people might not believe it
  • Counter - to react to something with an opposing opinion or action
  • Displace - to force someone to leave their own country and live somewhere else
  • Triggering - to make something happen
  • Migration - to go to another place or country in order to find work
  • Burn something down - to destroy something, especially a building, by fire, or to be destroyed by fire
  • Flee - to escape by running away, especially because of danger or fear
  • Persecution - extremely bad treatment of someone, especially because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Immigrants - people who come to live in a country from another country
  • Deport - to send someone out of a country, usually because they do not have a legal right to be there
  • Stripped - removed
  • Junta - a government, especially a military one, that has taken power in a country by force and not by election
  • Drum up - to try to make people support you
  • De facto - actual, even though not official
  • Era - a historical period with a particular character or feature
  • Democracy - a system of government in which people vote in elections to choose the people who will govern them
  • Ineffective - something that is ineffective does not work correctly or does not do what you want it to do
  • Disadvantaged - disadvantaged people do not have the same advantages as other people, for example because they do not have much money
  • Wielding - to have a lot of influence or power over other people
  • Considerable - large or of noticeable importance
  • Escalating - to make something much worse or more serious
  • Conflict - angry disagreement between people or groups
  • Denial - a statement that something is not true or did not happen
  • Atrocity- a cruel and violent act, often in a war
  • Persecute - to treat someone extremely badly, or to refuse them equal rights, especially because of their race, religion, or political beliefs
  • Plight - a sad, serious, or difficult situation
