Two Indian Films, 'Masaan' And 'Chauthi Koot', Shall Compete At Cannes 2015

April 16, 2015

This is turning out to be a pretty good year for independent cinema in India. On Thursday afternoon, it was announced that two films from India will be competing at the 'Un Certain Regard' section of this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The films that have been chosen for this honour are: 'Masaan' (Fly Away Solo), directed by debut filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan and starring Richa Chadda and Sanjay Mishra; and 'Chauthi Koot', directed by Gurvinder Singh, who previously made 2011's highly-acclaimed 'Anhey Ghorey Da Daan'.

Ghaywan reacted ecstatically to the news on Twitter.

In a press conference held in Paris that was streamed live across the world, Cannes' festival director Thierry Frémaux spoke about the growing importance of including movies from India and said, "Indian films in Cannes will be 'new gen' — not Bollywood and not 'Bengali auteur'."
